About the Author

Roger Miesfeld: A Leader in Biochemistry Education and Research

Roger Miesfeld is a professor and department head in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona, Tucson. For over 30 years, he has focused his research on the regulatory mechanisms in eukaryotic cell signal transduction. His lab initially studied steroid hormone signaling in human diseases like leukemia, prostate cancer, and asthma. Recently, his research has shifted to the metabolic regulation of blood meal metabolism in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which transmit dengue and Zika viruses. Currently, his team aims to identify mosquito-selective, bio-safe inhibitors of processes that regulate mosquito eggshell synthesis.

Throughout his career, Dr. Miesfeld has taught a variety of biochemistry courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical levels. Now, he teaches the largest undergraduate biochemistry courses at the University of Arizona. Additionally, he has authored two other textbooks, Applied Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry: A Short Course, and received the University of Arizona Honors College Faculty Excellence Award. Dr. Miesfeld holds a BS and MS in cell biology from San Diego State University and a PhD in biochemistry from Stony Brook University. Before joining the University of Arizona faculty in 1987, he was a Jane Coffin Childs Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco.

Megan McEvoy: Advancing Protein Biochemistry and Structural Biology

Megan McEvoy is a protein biochemist and structural biologist with a broad research background. Her work primarily focuses on how metal ions are managed in microbial systems, particularly their acquisition and elimination. She investigates protein-protein interactions and how proteins specifically recognize metal ions. Over the years, Dr. McEvoy has taught various undergraduate biochemistry courses, including those for majors, nonmajors, and honors students. For many years, she taught nonmajors biochemistry at the University of Arizona alongside Dr. Miesfeld.

Dr. McEvoy earned her BS in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her PhD in chemistry from the University of Oregon. She began her career as an assistant professor at the University of Arizona in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics. Later, she became an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Currently, she is a professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UCLA.
